Developing a one voice strategy for the North East England Construction Sector, to secure support and funding for a sustainable industry.

The Construction Industry accounts for 8.5% of all jobs in the North East, with a projected construction spend of over £3 billion per year for the next five years. Our industry is seen as an international leader in digital services, construction development and building information modelling (BIM) and it’s envisaged that 4,200 new construction jobs will be created in the North East by 2022.

But if we want a vibrant, dynamic and sustainable construction sector that will play a part in the development, growth and economic success of the future of North East England, then we must focus on skills, building a sustainable industry, productivity and innovation.

Come along to the consultation event and tell us what’s going on in the industry and what you think we need to do to make a difference.

Procuring for Value  asks some very challenging questions for clients, and represents a very real contrast to existing culture and practice within clients and their supply chains.  This event takes a step back and looks at what this means – Construction Leadership, namely the call to clients and their advisors to build and demonstrate leadership.

We are delighted to welcome Andy Mitchell to the North East to speak.  Andy is CEO of the multi-billion Thames Tideway infrastructure project and Co-Chair of the Construction Leadership Council.  The Government wants very different outcomes from construction compared to business as usual; this is an opportunity to engage with a national construction leader on what the opportunities are for the North East in this context and understand how we can shape success.

There is a desperate need for ambitious, transformational clients to seize these opportunities and create the space for change.  Tom Jarman will be presenting on client leadership – what does this look like, how do we recognise it?  And what can we do to support it?

Finally, we will hear from Oliver Novakovic, Technical and Innovation Director at Barratts.  Oliver is passionate about performance, productivity and quality, and has extensive experience in the construction sector to draw on, including the current AIMCH programme.  He will talk about construction leadership from his perspective, what it looks like in practice, and outline what difference the space for change, driven by clients, could make.

Constructing Excellence in the North East are delighted to welcome back Ann Bentley, Global Director at RLB and Procuring for Value (PFV) workstream lead in the Construction Leadership Council back to the region.

Ann will update us on what has been developed as her workstream starts to come to a close, and the PFV Tool is readied for deployment.

So what is Procuring for Value?  How will it operate?  And more importantly, what opportunity will it create; how do we engage and benefit?  Procuring For Value has potential to be a very significant carrier for change; with our passion for better homes, infrastructure and outcomes how can we give it the best chance for success?

This event also includes an update on the NE Construction Strategy, and finishes with a workshop where we will consider what we have learned about PFV and the Strategy, and turn this into challenges to be submitted to the Dynamo NE Innovation Day 2019, creating an opportunity to link opportunities and barriers with potential solutions.

Construction Insurance Risks

Date: 6th June 2019
Time: 8.30am – 10.30am
Venue: Middlesbrough Football Club
Cost: £10 + VAT

“Construction insurance can present tricky terrain to negotiate, with a minefield of policies, acronyms and jargon. Adam Aston from our Construction Team will attempt to simply and demystify some common construction related insurance issues.

In this (hopefully interactive) session we will dig deeper into practical and legal issues including:

  • typical construction risks;
  • mitigating those risks through insurance;
  • who needs to be insured; and
  • how should they be insured.

We hope this session will be useful to construction professionals including developers, contractors, sub-contractors and consultants at all levels of the construction chain.”

There have been big improvements over recent years in reducing the number and rate of injuries to construction workers. Despite this, construction remains a high-risk industry and accounts for a high percentage of fatal and major injuries.

What is less recognised is that construction is a high-risk industry for health issues too.

Chris Lucas, Head of HSE’s Construction Sector Health Unit will be providing an overview presentation on current and developing issues covering:
– Lung disease
– Materials handling
– Workplace stress together with updates on evolving health matters.
