The Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation, North East & Cumbria Region, alongside the Transport Planning Society, are pleased to announce the “An Introduction To…” seminar series.

As one of the leading centres of transport technology in Europe, the Transport Operations Research Group (TORG) have been central to key research in areas such as road user charging and smartcards.

In addition to running a world-leading trial in electric vehicles and public charging infrastructure in the North East they have also developed low-cost wireless sensing technology called Motes. This is being deployed commercially by several local authorities to monitor traffic pollution, manage the traffic demand and reduce emissions.

Dr Neil Thorpe has worked within TORG since 1989 and has contributed to numerous papers, including road safety research and training workshops both nationally and abroad. He will cover the basics of Academic Research, including how to become involved in the field, to choose a topic and where to start. He’ll also give a brief overview of the studies currently underway at the University, and recent successes.

Join us at Newcastle University for the next seminar in our ‘Introduction To…’ series, designed for those pursuing professional qualifications in engineering and transport planning, and for those following the TPS Professional Development Scheme.

Costs to the UK from Congestion, Safety and Emissions are estimated at £65 billion a year.  The use of technology to better manage our networks, make them safer and minimise the impact of vehicle on our environment is significant.  Costs to society would be much greater without the use of technology, but we can still do a lot more.  Technology plays a critical role in maximising the use of our built infrastructure, and should be an integral part of any transport planning, design and construction programme.

Trevor Platt has been involved in the application of Intelligent Transport Systems technology for 30 years, and this presentation provides a broad overview of the current technology applications for our motorways, urban networks, bridges and tunnels. It looks how we can use technology to encourage use our public transport and how we can use pricing to manage the demand for road use and pay for specific infrastructure.  The next 5 years will see a massive change in how we use and pay for our transport; the presentation provides a glimpse of the future, introducing the concept of Mobility as a Service (MaaS) and looks at how our vehicles are becoming more connected and autonomous in their use.
