Following in the footsteps of the great ‘paper architects’ of architectural history, RIBA North East practices are invited to share their ‘Unbuilt North East’. Share your favourite schemes that never got built, your thesis scheme from the pre-computer era or a competition entry that you still dream about.

There are two key points of criteria that must be adhered to: the proposal has to be sited in the North East of England and it can’t be for a scheme that was designed and then built by separate practices.

We are looking for up to 10 RIBA Chartered Practices to deliver presentations in the entertaining Pecha Kucha format, 20 slides, 20 seconds per slide and can include from 1no. to 20no.

RIBA’s accredited Principal Designer course define and provide adequate ‘skills, knowledge, experience’ to a professionally agreed standard. To show awareness and capability to deliver this role there is an industry expectation for professionals to demonstrate attendance and knowledge attained. The application of CDM is more of an art than a box ticking exercise for compliance. CDM 2015 goes further than previous versions in expecting the construction industry specialists to know their ‘business’.

It takes great skill, knowledge and experience to weave health and safety compliance through the construction design process. The art is to complete it without a specific reference to anything as staccato as legislation and regulation, as often as possible.

Through the use of a case study, this seminar will explore the various duty holder roles and responsibilities, and will explain how, in the pre-construction phase of a project, the Principal Designer is expected to take control of planning, managing and monitoring of health and safety. This seminar will address what must be done, what should be done, and what that might look like in practice, so far as reasonably practicable.

Since carrying out work to a listed building without consent is technically a criminal offence, it is important to have a good understanding of what does and what does not require consent.

The seminar will include a workshop on how to use Heritage Gateway to identify heritage assets near your site, and what to do with that information.

In a matter of months, the government has disbanded the Zero Carbon Hub, withdrawn the Code for Sustainable Homes, abandoned the zero carbon target for new homes by 2016, postponed the revisions to Part L and by all accounts, effectively scrapped the 2019 zero carbon target for non-domestic buildings. But one thing has not gone away: Climate Change. If anything, the need to design low impact, resilient buildings is even greater as carbon emissions continue to increase globally.

Rather than dwelling on these gloomy facts, this presentation will illustrate the exciting opportunities in designing new future proofed low impact homes that are also well-designed
